The rainbow appeared before the rain left. That felt like a sign, though I knew better than to let a sky do my thinking for me. Still, Rainbreak Bar had a way of making bright ideas look possible.
A narrow strip of ground
The sandbar was barely wide enough for the tackle box and my boots. Water ran on both sides, one calm and one quick. I chose the calm side first because it made no promises.
The jump that changed the weather
A bass broke the surface in the bright gap beneath the rainbow. It rose so cleanly that the rod in my hand felt like an afterthought. Then it landed, and the whole bar seemed to laugh.
One cast, not ten
I made a single cast beyond the ripple. The lure crossed the bright water, paused, and disappeared. The fish ran into the current, came back through the calm, and gave the day one good chapter.
A dry notebook at last
Back at the boat, I wrapped the log in my shirt and wrote only three words: rain, colour, patience.
