The Quiet Wharf Has Its Own Tide

Stylised fictional scene for The Quiet Wharf Has Its Own Tide

The best part of Hush Wharf was that it never asked me to hurry. By the time the lantern came on, the boats had gone, the birds had changed shifts, and the water looked ready to keep its own counsel.

Three lures, one page

I laid out three lures, then put two away. The point was not minimalism as a performance. It was leaving enough room on the bench to write a true sentence about the evening.

The fish below the boards

A bass moved slowly under the wharf, never close enough for a clean cast. I watched its shadow make small edits to the reflection of the lantern.

The note that mattered

I wrote: no catch, no complaint, good water. It was the shortest entry in the book and possibly the one I trust most.

Closing the box

The last task was simple: close the lure box, put the cup away, and walk back along the wharf without adding an ending that did not happen.
