Copper Cove gave me three choices: cast into the wind, wait it out, or make a cup of tea and pretend the first two were not choices at all. I started with the tea.
The cove would not sit still
The orange cliffs reflected back at the water like warm metal. Each gust pushed the boat one way and the line another. My first casts were all energy and no attention.
A smaller target
I moved from the open cove to a narrow seam near the rocks. The spot was barely wider than the boat. It was enough. A smaller target can ask for a calmer answer.
The current changed its mind
Just after the wind dropped, a dark shape crossed the seam. I made one soft cast and watched the lure disappear beside the rock shadow. The rod loaded, the fish ran, and the cove finally got quiet.
What stayed with me
The bass was not the biggest thing in Copper Cove. The decision to slow down was. I marked the seam with a coral dot on the map and left the rest blank.
