Log 02 / Coral shelf

Under the Reef Pulse

Stylised fictional scene for Under the Reef Pulse

The reef began where the wave colour changed from turquoise to ink. I left the rod on the boat, pulled on a mask, and followed the slow flash of a bass that seemed to know every ledge before I did.

The map looked different below

From the deck, Ribbon Shelf was only a pale shape. Below it, each coral bowl held another direction. Old rope, a lure box and a string of fish-shaped shadows gave the place a patient rhythm.

A fish with its own route

The bass never rushed. It worked the shelf in loops, lifting through the light and dropping behind the coral when I got too close. I learned more by matching its pace than by pointing at it.

The pocket of stillness

At the deepest bowl, the current stopped for a breath. That was where I saw the old wooden lure box wedged into the stone. No treasure—just a reminder that every expedition leaves something behind.

Back to the surface

When I climbed into the boat, the sea looked ordinary again. The entry in my log was short: clear water, careful hands, no need to force a catch.
